Nokia drops Ovi, migrates brand to “Nokia” starting July

Nokia has today announced that as part of the release of new devices in the near future, the company is to drop the Ovi range of services and rebrand them as “Nokia” services, a transition the Finnish giant expects to start in July and continue into 2012.
All of the services that currently under the Ovi brand will soon be know as Nokia, centralising the brand to ensure consumers are able to link the company to the range of tools and services it provides. Nokia says that as part of the reband, service roadmaps will not be impacted.
Although Nokia doesn’t specify which countries will see the rebranding first, it is expected that North American and European markets will see the new Nokia brand first, completing across all countries and services by the end of 2012. Those already owning Nokia phones will slowly see the name change propagate via device updates.
The name change will also help Nokia build a brand around its partnership with Microsoft and the future roll out of Windows Phone 7 devices. By dropping the Ovi brand, Nokia will not have to market both the Nokia and Ovi tools, keeping it all under one name.

Nokia’s EVP and Chief Marketing Officer, Jerri DeVard explains:

“We have made the decision to change our service branding from Ovi to Nokia. By centralizing our services identity under one brand, not two, we will reinforce the powerful master brand of Nokia and unify our brand architecture – while continuing to deliver compelling opportunities and experiences for partners and consumers alike.”

DeVard wants consumers to associate the best services with the Nokia brand, removing any differentiation that could potentially confuse. Nokia says it will update devices but also change printed material or online media and advertisements, working as hard as possible to make it a seamless transition.

The Case of the Disappearing WiMAX Label

Comcast today announced that it too has a 4G MiFi device that offers consumers a Wi-Fi connection using the cellular network for backhaul. What I found curious, however, is that in the release about both the device and Comcast’s Xfinity Internet 2go service, there’s no mention of the WiMAX protocol, which is what the MiFi uses in 4G mode (it also is backwards compatible over Sprint’s 3G network). This is the second time in three weeks that WiMAX has been made notable by its absence, with the first being the wholesale agreement signed between WiMAX operators Clearwire and Sprint
While part of the reason Clearwire and Comcast may not be stressing WiMAX anymore is that with every operator under the sun now calling their Long Term Evolution, HSPA and HSPA+ services 4G, the folks at the cable companies and Clearwire figure they might as well focus on the 4G tag so consumers feel like they are buying an equally fast connection. But my other hunch is that the WiMAX label will be in shorter and shorter supply as Clearwire and Sprint get closer to announcing their plans to switch over to LTE technology.
This will create it its own problems for folks who could next year find their current WiMAX MiFI no longer works on an LTE-based 4G network, but perhaps Comcast will offer some kind of trade-in discount, or perhaps the conversion will take much longer. Clearwire has emphasized that converting from a WiMAX network to an LTE network will involve some equipment swaps but won’t require a complete network overhaul. Clearwire is also in talks with Sprint to get access to its new, radio-agnostic network architecture the mobile operator plans to deploy according to a Clearwire executive speaking yesterday on the firm’s conference call.
So we may soon have to say goodbye to the WiMAX network, as the U.S. standardized on LTE and HSPA+, both GSM technologies that will also make our phones and devices more compatible with those used in the rest of the world. I, for one, don’t mind.

Google Launches Chromebooks with Samsung and Acer

Samsung and Acer are launching two new notebooks running Google’s Chrome OS this summer in the U.S. and six European countries. Acer’s Chromebook will start at $349, and Samsung’s model will be priced $429 for its WiFi model and $499 for a model with 3G connectivity. The devices will go on sale on June 15 and will be available online in the U.S. through Amazon.com and Best Buy’s online store.
Samsung will also bring a Chromebox thin desktop to market that can be used in business settings. The Chromebox will be part of a program called Chrome for business that’s basically a subscription model, priced at $28 per month per user. Chrome for business will offer support and cloud services, and devices will be replaced at the end of their life cycle.
A third initiative is Chromebooks for schools, which will be available per student for $20 per month, and will include the same kind of service as the business offering. Chrome for business and Chromebooks for schools will also be available starting on June 15, with Google directly handling the orders. Google is launching its consumer, business and education offerings in the U.K., France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy. Google is working with local carriers to make 3G connectivity available in each of these markets.
Google unveiled the original Chrome OS laptop, dubbed CR-48, back in December, which was only distributed as part of an invite-only pilot program. Pichai said that more than a million people applied for the program within a few weeks, adding that the company has “literally shipped thousands of devices” since.
